Building the School: Part 1 — The Assignment I Could Not Walk Away From
This is the first in a series documenting the journey of building the Kahill Digital Marketing School—from the data that confirmed the vision to the curriculum, the first cohort, and everything in between. If you are a founder, educator, or digital professional building something in Africa’s creative economy, this series is for you. There are assignments that find you before you are ready for them. I have learned, over twenty years of building in Uganda’s digital space, that the most important things I have ever done did not begin with a business plan. They began with a persistent, uncomfortable awareness of a gap—something missing, something broken, something that kept showing…

Responsible Digital Behaviors
Navigating the Digital World with Kindness and Responsibility Recently I was approached by a young person who requested I talk about online etiquette; how we behave responsibly in the digital world. Today I am going to share in belief what I shared with them. What digital behaviour is about and how you can do it as a digital native. As a digital marketing consultant and coach, I see amazing things happening online, but there’s also a potential downside. Just like in the real world, the online world can be a mix of good and bad. The good news is, with a few simple practices, we can all make the internet…

Implications of the High Court Ruling on WhatsApp Contracts for Uganda’s Digital Marketing Sector
The High Court in Kampala, Uganda made a novel ruling that affirmed the legal validity of contracts executed through WhatsApp. Judge Patricia Kahigi Asiimwe of the Commercial Division ruled that under the Electronic Transactions Act, the definition of a data message is something that has to be stored by a computer. And then went ahead and declared that WhatsApp messages are considered legally binding agreements under section 3 of the Contracts Act, as they qualify as data messages created, transmitted, received, or stored through computer systems. This precedent-setting decision emerged from a case filed by Dr. Rodney Mugarura against Paramount Hospital Kampala Limited and its Director, Dr. Simon Begumisa. Dr Mugarura…

The Smuggler’s Manifesto and its Implications on Innovation
The smuggler’s manifesto is a document that was leaked online by an anonymous source, claiming to be a member of a global network of smugglers who operate in the shadows of the law. The manifesto reveals the methods, motives, and philosophy of the smugglers, who claim to be providing a valuable service to humanity by circumventing the restrictions and regulations imposed by governments and corporations. The manifesto challenges the conventional notions of legality, morality, and sovereignty, and argues that smuggling is a form of resistance against the oppressive forces that seek to control and exploit people. The smugglers claim to be guided by a code of ethics that respects the…

What is the Logic behind your services and products as a business owner?
A few months ago, I was attending the Thrive Business Owners Breakfast meeting organized by Worship Harvest Ministries under the Harvest Institute School of Practical Business where I had many light bulb moments and sparks of idea development. One of the things that had been keeping me uncomfortable is the question in the title that was asked by one of the facilitators at the breakfast, Dir. Grace Muyiira – the founder of Vine Pharmaceuticals and a franchise coach. He posed that question while talking about a business’s ‘Source of Superior Performance’ which is value capture (what your services or products are perceived to be by the market) and creation (what…

Alternative marketing, the death of cookies
It is important for all businesses to review how they are harnessing the marketing trends so they can apply the latest innovations through the 70:20:10 rule of marketing focus. The rule has it that 70% of the time we focus on things that are very core to our business, 20% is where we are trying to push the boundaries, the known unknowns; and the last 10% is the true crazy experimental stuff where we figure out how to do uncomfortable things that we are going to fail at more than we will succeed at. But with every success, you build a competitive advantage. This is the long version of the…
