‘Don’t kill yourself jogging’ were the words my doctor told me when I started my exercise program last year.
I had been running for two days, on the 3rd day my heart give out. I collapsed on the road and felt myself lose my breath.
When I visited my doctor, he was not happy that I had started an exercise program with out his consultation. I have a small heart that can not take the pressure of jogging but can take other forms of soft exercises.
According to him the exercise culture has been adopted in Kampala, but not everyone can jog, lift weights or yoga, and i agreed with him. His recommendations were helpful and am sharing them with you, now.
Before you start an exercise program ask yourself these questions;
- Has your doctor ever said that you have a heart condition and that you should only do physical activity recommended by a doctor?
- Do you feel pain in your chest when you do physical activity?
- In the past month, have you had chest pain when you were not doing physical activity?
- Do you lose your balance because of dizziness or do you ever lose consciousness?
- Do you have a bone or joint problem (for example, back, knee, or hip) that could be made worse by a change in your physical activity?
- Is your doctor currently prescribing drugs (for example, water pills) for your blood pressure or heart condition?
- Do you know of any other reason why you should not do physical activity?
If your answer is YES to any of the questions above, you must check in with your doctor and get cleared before you start. A qualified healthcare provider should be consulted before beginning any new exercise program,this is a MUST.
After my physical with my doctor, we concluded that jogging was not for me but Yoga and Aerobics were my best alternatives. I choose Yoga and he suggested these tips
- Workouts should begin with a warm-up routine and end with a cool-down segment that includes stretching exercises. Don’t overstrain yourself while at it. Take it slow as your body adjusts to your new life style.
- How much time do you have available to train, and how much time can you really commit?
- Exercise can cause dehydration. Drink plenty of water before and after physical activity.
- Have an eventual goals and what possible obstacle
- The next step would be to come up with some strategies for dealing with the mental barriers so that you are able to move forward.
- Try to join other people doing the same exercise as you. Exercising in solitude takes discipline.
- Vary your routines to keep from getting bored.
