Tackling Counterfeit Drugs With MFeyti

According to Solomon Opio, Capacity Development Lead, Outbox Hub, Mfeyti is a web and mobile-based platform for users to verify the authenticity of drugs/medications given to them. The developers boast of having an artificial intelligence chatbot that guides on how to stay away from counterfeit like the hepatitis B vaccines now causing a storm in the Uganda health sector and any other counterfeit drugs.
Solomon reports that to the user this platform one inputs unique identification numbers that are available on the packaging of ever drug and the application gives results and advises the patient on how to use the medicine. Also, a user can report drugs that they suspect to be counterfeit.
Accessing the application is through messaging Mfeyti on Facebook Messenger. It is reported that one receives instant results when used. But the team is working on launching  USSD access for every Ugandan.

Intelligent Water Management System Won at #DigihackAfrica2018

During the #DigihackAfrica2018 48 hours hackathon- where Siemens engineers alongside IoT and digital industry experts from IBM, IoT.Nxt, Atos and Wits University worked on ideas that had potential to disrupt the IIoT environment in Africa – the team with the decentralized intelligent water management system, won.

The fully automated water accounting and leak detection system is made up of intelligently linked instrumentation from Siemens, flow meters and pressure transmitters linked to a GPRS 3G module that sends signals back to an in-house cloud-based system. Through a mobile app, water technicians and engineers on the field will have real-time monitoring access to the flow of water in any water infrastructure network on a device. The winning team will travel to Siemens HQ to further develop their idea and receive seed capital towards making their idea commercially viable.
