Last week on Thursday one of my 3,000 friends on Facebook killed himself. He was young. He was an achiever at his workplace. He was in love. He was suffering from depression. He had been depressed for some time as per the information that came through on Facebook from those who were close to him. It looks like he killed himself after someone called D blew him off and asked he deletes their chats.
On Monday morning that same week, I had opened my Twitter feed and found a thread narrating an attempted suicide by a young man. He had been invited to go to church on Sunday by one of his friends but the request. He was found by the ask-er laying unconscious in his room. Next to him was a suicide note, a rope, and a bottle of detergent. On taking him to the hospital, they found he had taken a number of tablets that were forced out of his stomach and he recovered.
A month ago, one of my former college classmates died. He had bipolar tendencies and on this one night, someone thought it wise to beat him up and left for dead as he went into a mood swing. He was a well-known doctor and represented a member of his church.
A year ago, a poet friend killed herself. She was found hanging in her room with a note by her side describing how life was not worth it anymore and she couldn’t keep faking it.
A few years back, I almost killed myself because some how somewhere I felt like it was the only alternative. But it was never. There was hope and hope I have been sharing with other who reach out to me when they don’t know what they minds are telling them.
Today, I am about to birth a project called Mental Health Well-being under Kahill Insights Company Limited in partnership with Mental Health First Aid Program that will train anyone and everyone on how to administer first aid to those who reach out to them with mental illness signs.
On 11th April 2019, we will have our first focus group discussion tackling the views and ideas about mental health problems and how they can help themselves and others going through it.
With the vision to build a facility that will house a gym, spa and therapy rooms for Mental Health Well-being this discussion with usher in Four training sessions that will certify Mental Illness First Aiders that can go out and help those around them and themselves improve their mental well being.
