Orange Drives Digital Transformation in the Middle East and Africa with New Innovations in Smart Metering, Solar Power, NFC and Customer Experience?

These guys are on a roll!

They have earned 19 million customers (+36% year on year) and one billion euros of transactions in one month, according to press release. Orange has recorded around 50% growth in revenue in the first half 2016 compared to first half 2015.

It has also completed the acquisition of mobile operator Airtel in Sierra Leone.

They are to reported to launch smart metering in Tunisia to help utility companies reduce the cost of reading meters and the risk of fraud or billing errors.

They have branded smartphones driving data usage and roaming around the world, and launched new 4G smartphone, the Orange Rise 51 alongside their new Orange customer value proposition for travellers within the MEA region and some European destinations.

Orange has a Rural Electrification Programme, the first domestic solar-energy trial for consumers to generate electricity in rural Africa. It is to be piloted first in the Ivory Coast, Senegal and Cameroon from November 2016, Orange is providing solar kits or micro-grids to rural communities to harness the power of the sun and generate electricity.

Starting in Mali, Guinea and the Ivory Coast this month, NFC Coins in effect ‘digitises’ coins to provide an easy, quick and secure way to get change from any merchant. NFC Coins is a contactless solution to top up any Orange customer with airtime without disclosing the phone number, and solves the issue of a lack of change and coins in Africa.  Once an Orange customer sticks an NFC tag on their mobile, the merchant returns change to them in the form of airtime credit instantaneously.

And finally Orange APIs supports the African Digital Ecosystem and they have also developed their own USSD based app store through which service providers can deliver mobile services to any type of phone.  Orange end customers can access it to find all kinds of content on all topics provided by partners.

Safaricom Dropped Roaming Charges by 99%.

Following successful negotiations with its global network of partners, Safaricom reduced roaming charges for calls and data by up to 99 per cent for over 200 networks across the world.

Safaricom customers will be able to enjoy reduced data roaming rates at the rate of KSh14 per MB in over 52 countries, as well as make calls at reduced rates. Read more here.

Jumia Group has been named as the only Africa-focused company to make the World’s Top 50 Smartest Companies list (2016), published by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The announcement comes shortly after Jumia Group (formerly known as Africa Internet Group) earned the impressive title of ‘Africa’s First Unicorn’.

MIT Smartest Companies was first published in 2010 under the title, Most Innovative Companies. This year’s list mainly spread between Biotech, Computing & Telecommunication, Transportation and Internet & Digital Media.
