It is considered a vital trait that manifests in various aspects of life, exhibiting different levels and forms. It refers to being steadfast, reliable, and uniform in actions, words, and values. Consistency breeds trust, credibility, and excellence, making it a highly desirable attribute in personal and professional spaces.
I am rereading the 15 Laws of Invaluable Growth book by John C Maxwell for a school assignment and he says in his Law of Consistency that to make a significant change, consistency has to be one of the main ingredients of whatever someone is doing. He concluded this law and said, “Motivation gets you going, but discipline keeps you growing.”
For the last few months, I have found myself in a place where the only consistent thing I was doing was sleeping, praying, being on my phone and eating. While on my phone scrolling away on social media I found myself thinking about consistency. So, I decided to research and read up on it. With the internet, it is now easy to learn things while in your bed and eating banana crips.
On my quest, I found these different levels of consistency:
- Basic Consistency: Meeting minimum expectations, following rules and norms, and maintaining a standard level of performance.
- Intermediate Consistency: Demonstrating reliability, accountability, and a commitment to quality, leading to increased trust and credibility.
- Advanced Consistency: Exhibiting exceptional dedication, precision, and innovation, setting new standards and inspiring others.
- Mastery Consistency: Achieving expertise, thought leadership, and consistent excellence, leaving a lasting impact.
Learning about these levels had me in an evaluation mood. I started measuring my 5 capitals (Spiritual, physical, Financial, Intellectual and Relational) on each level to see how I fair. I am doing badly.
Then I found these forms of Consistency:
- Behavioural Consistency: Aligning actions with values, beliefs, and goals, ensuring integrity and reliability.
- Performance Consistency: Delivering consistent results, meeting deadlines, and maintaining quality standards.
- Communication Consistency: Using a clear, respectful, and transparent tone, ensuring effective messaging and feedback.
- Emotional Consistency: Managing emotions, remaining calm under pressure, and showing empathy and understanding.
- Visual Consistency: Maintaining a consistent aesthetic, branding, and design, enhancing recognition and professionalism.
I had to wake up and get back on the treadmill. I can’t be only an intermediate behavioural communication performance, emotional visual consistent person. There is a lot to improve. I am thankful that school helps with performance and work communication. Now I need to ‘pull up my stocking to advanced consistency.
