Reflecting on my journey in discipleship, alignment has played a crucial role in my spiritual growth. This alignment is about harmonizing my thoughts, feelings, and actions with the guidance of a spiritual leader or mentor. It’s a journey filled with trust, surrender, and personal responsibility.
Recently, a friend asked me what I thought about alignment with a leader. According to how, one can do it and not miss out on anything the leader has to offer them. I told them the need for spiritual guidance through prayer by asking God who they would like them to align with and how they can do it best, then the below can be adopted.
Submission to Guidance: The First Step.
At the beginning, I had to acknowledge my mentor’s wisdom and experience. Trusting that they were placed in my life to help me grow spiritually was not an easy step. It required humility and a willingness to submit to their guidance, knowing they had my best interests at heart. My alignment with them was for my benefit, as they had what I needed.
Trust and Surrender: Letting Go.
One of the most challenging aspects was learning to trust my mentor’s intentions and surrender my own desires and agendas. As an introverted, independent person, I had to learn to depend on and be involved with. It meant letting go of my need for control and allowing their wisdom to shape my spiritual journey. This surrender has been both freeing and transformative, opening up new perspectives and paths I wouldn’t have considered on my own.
Shared Vision and Values: Walking Together.
Another vital component of alignment was developing a shared vision and set of values with my mentor. We spent time discussing spiritual goals and ensuring we were moving in the same direction. This shared understanding has created a strong foundation for our relationship and my growth.
Accountability and Feedback: Growing Through Reflection.
Regular check-ins and open communication have been essential. Through honest feedback and constructive criticism, I’ve been able to make course corrections and celebrate my progress. This accountability has kept me focused and motivated.
Mutual Support and Encouragement: Building a Safe Space
The journey of alignment isn’t just about receiving guidance—it’s also about supporting each other. My mentor and I have built a nurturing environment where we encourage each other. This mutual support has fostered a deep sense of trust and safety, essential for growth.
Recognizing Spiritual Authority: Honouring the Anointing.
Acknowledging my mentor’s spiritual authority and the anointing on their life has been key. Understanding that they are accountable to God for my spiritual well-being has deepened my respect and commitment to the process.
Personal Responsibility: Owning My Growth.
While I’ve submitted to guidance, I’ve also had to take responsibility for my spiritual growth. This means making my own decisions and taking ownership of my actions and progress. It’s a balance of trust and personal accountability.
Humility and Teachability: Staying Open.
Maintaining a humble and teachable spirit has been essential. Recognizing that I have much to learn and valuing my mentor’s guidance has kept me open to growth and transformation.
Aligning with a spiritual mentor in a discipleship space has deepened my understanding of God’s Word, developed spiritual disciplines, and helped me overcome challenges. It’s a journey of growing in maturity and Christ-like character, ultimately fulfilling my God-given purpose and calling.
