Today I have decide to read papers on and write about rights to information in regard to rights to retirement benefits because I found it interesting last time I attended the #KnowYourPension event.

I treasure my right to information because I know it is a fundamental human right, recognized in a number of international and regional human rights treaties as well as the national Constitution.

Information disclosure to me is defence system that enforces of all forms of rights including the right to social security.

It should be noted that retirement benefits form part of the broader right to social security which is widely recognized under international human rights law. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is the first human rights document to recognize every ones right to social security which includes a right to retirement benefits. (The things you learn when you read, I didn’t know this).

This right encompasses the right to access and maintain benefits whether in cash or in kind without discrimination as a form of protection from among others the lack of work related income as a result of sickness, disability, injury, unemployment or old age according to the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR).

Access to information is key in the enforcement of all rights and freedoms including the right to social security and social insurance which guarantees human dignity for all persons when faced with circumstances that disable them from fully realizing their rights.

As I read on I discovered that social security schemes must guarantee the right of individuals and organizations alike to seek, receive and impart information on all social security entitlements in a clear and transparent manner.

And that a scheme is supposed to be open for participation of stake holders significantly the beneficiaries.  This is can only be achieved where there is adequate and timely disclosure of information related to retirement benefits.

Finally I found out that a scheme must be furnished with general information on the scheme as well as specific information such as the nature of the benefit, expected benefit and returns on savings.

Now going to look for information at National Social Security council (NSSF).
