I was to post this yesterday evening but I got derailed by an incident. A friend of mine was arrested yesterday for owning a Besigye (FDC presidential aspirant 2016) tshirt. As of now we are sure to say Uganda Police – earlier we didn’t know who had taken him, as they never identified themselves – they accused him of masterminding a Protest that was slated for today Monday 30th in Jinja. How was he going to distribute 20 Shirts to thousands of Ugandans? Also the people who printed and designed the shirts were arrested as well under unclear circumstances. We are tweeting using #FreeSamwyri

Because of  #FreeSamwyri, #PKTechWeekly for 22nd to 28th May comes to you late.

Telecom PR departments are for what?

Last week, I suffered with very bad speed from my internet provider who apologised and told me that they were experiencing a ‘cable cut’ that they are working on and how that accounted to the snail, off and on speeds they were providing me. This response came after almost everyone I knew was complaining about the speeds and was receiving the same answer, ‘cable cuts’.

So I wonder, when these coms notice that their cables have been cut and that, that will affect the people’s internet speeds, why are no press releases issued to notify people of the expected outcomes? And please don’t tell me about competition because this is not about them but he customers who pay for these services.  I think if you are for the people you will make sure ‘you are for the people’ not the government, not the profits too.

Huawei Sues Samsung for infringing its Patents

The wars on infringing by mobile phone manufacturers are never going to stop. This time what hit my inbox news notification was this infringing suit by Huawei against Samsung. Huawei filed lawsuits for patent infringement against Samsung in the United States and China, including District Court for the Northern District of California and Shenzhen Intermediate People’s Court. In these lawsuits, Huawei seeks compensation for Samsung’s infringement of Huawei’s intellectual property, including valuable patents relating to cellular communications technology and software used by Samsung’s mobile phones.

Facebook Fonts

I am not sure if this is happening to me alone but I have a small font form the usual Time Romans font for Facebook. When I googled(the answer to many of our questions) I found that this happened to many other people, a year ago… but why I getting it now?  Anyway I found a Chrome extension that allows me to change the fonts in whatever I want. I changed back to Time Romans from their Calibri font that is too tiny for my eyes.  If you a different font too, check this out.

Technology for TB treatment

To curb the high rate Tuberculosis infection and find an efficient and cost-effective solution to notify and provide treatment to people in India, innovative software was developed. The technology facilitated notification of patients and simultaneously initiated treatment adherence support through daily SMS text messages and twice-weekly interactive voice response calls, or IVRCs. The result are reported to be have been effective as 95 percent of the patients were taking their treatment regularly and over 90 percent of the patients found the reminders and IVRC helpful in adhering to treatment. You can read more about this here

Airtel Uganda and Huawei Technologies CSR

Yes, tech involved companies should do this a lot, give back to the people they are solving problems for. These two giants Airtel and Huawei, offered free health services to residents of Kampala city and surrounding areas through a free community health fair held at St Joseph Mulago Community Center, Kalerwe. In partnership with Huawei Technologies and the Hind’s Feet Project, a Non-Profit Organization that focuses on making health information accessible to all, the telecommunications company offered free medical services to over 1,000 hundreds of community members in an effort to improve their wellbeing and empower them with the basic health information and services they need to make appropriate health decisions.
