This weekly blog comes to you when I am mourning my darling friend who passed on, Friday nite in a boda (bike) accident. @JuliMuffn (Twitter)  was special! She was everyone I knew go to person for help, a laugh, a joke and some serious talk. She Loved God and had some tough question on His ways. I guess she gets to ask them directly, now.

Rest easy my darling, it’s not well with my soul but it will be.

I miss her, I can’t stop tearing up every time I think about her. I feel cheated, I feel lost and somehow confused, actually confused. We had plans for the weekend, plans for the months to come and years too. Now I don’t know!

Facebook says she was last online 8 hours ago, Facebook doesn’t know yet that she will never post anything again.

Anyway this blog post is not about my lovely darling but tech events that happened to pass by me in the week that has just ended, of 6th-11th June. So continue down for your #PkTechWeekly, leave me a comment and share;

Let’s start with

Minister of Information, ICT and Communications – Frank K Tumwebaze

I should be happy that my former neighbour still holds a post in the Uganda Cabinet, but I am not. This my former neighbour, is not the man for this job.

First and foremost what ministry is this that has two communications and Informations? I don’t care for what was added to the ministry to make it so, they should have found a better name for his ministry.

Second reason why I am not happy about his appointment and the main one. is that he is believed to have supported, be in support, still in support, might have suggested it even, the bill to tighten controls over social media and was reported to have said, while still minister for the presidency by AFP that,

‘The bill is intended to regulate what goes on in the communication sector for the good of Ugandans and their security. The aim of this bill is to amend the Uganda Communications Act 2013 by removing the requirement for the sector minister to seek parliamentary approval in regulating the communication sector.”

And this is the man who got the two communications and two informations ministry. Was the two for emphasis on the capacity of this new ministry presented to him, or?

Anyway to better stories,

Don’t worry about being a woman in Tech – Jessica Livingston, co-founder of Y Combinator

She said the below quote at a conference full of ladies in tech who were planning or owned startups.

“I want to talk a little more about that last point, worrying about being a woman in tech, since it’s the only one on the list that’s specific to this audience.

There are some real obstacles women face as startup founders. But there is just so much talk and noise about this topic that I worry it will scare potential founders away. Also, it’s hard to sift through everything and know what’s accurate and what’s not. The conversation around this topic is too often driven by people who are not actually building anything themselves. And as with any other topic, the amount of attention the press devotes to this issue is not determined by the size of the problem, but by its potential to generate page views. Controversy generates page views, so they write about controversy. You don’t hear as much about the many female founders who are quietly and successfully building their companies.

I don’t give a shit about page views. What I care about is how I can help support female founders.

The way I do it is to encourage women to start startups and help them succeed once they do. So while I’ll tell you that it is going to be harder for you as a woman, it’s not going to be so much harder that it will make the difference between success and failure. If you want to start a startup, just go ahead and do it, and don’t let yourself be intimidated or distracted by all the noise…all the news articles and Twitter controversy about how it’s harder for you as a woman. That’s not only the best plan for you personally, but it’s also the best way to fix these problems.”

In the above regard here is a solution made by someone who cares;

We are to have

Smart Cities in Africa

Africa’s cities are well-positioned to rapidly transform through the greater use of advanced technology and data. Smart applications, revolutionising consumer and utility services are enabling service providers to capture data and apply powerful analytics programmes.

These tools enable cities to improve the access, reliability and resilience of its resources and spaces, from improved traffic and transport management to increasingly efficient provision of water, power and other key services. Read more about this here.

This is all from me this weekend, until next week.
