I promised myself to be loyal to my blogging commitments this month and that commitment includes this part of my blog called #PKTechWeekly. Procrastination on it has been real, but I am walking in power with it this month.

So here we go….

Has Airtel Money and MTN Mobile Money gotten married?

Below is an image that has been making rounds on WhatsApp that I have failed to find an official settlement about.  It kinda says Airtel Money and MTN Mobile Money are to start relating/ dating each other. If you work in these two telecoms, please share some more details on this or many of us are thinking it a hoax, you guys can’t be going on dates like that after those ‘size yo’ and ‘paka’ come backs on each other. 

I will be waiting for those details in comments, but for now lets me share about this

SnapChat Stories features now on WhatsApp as Stories

I am sure for now you have already seen them, if not please update your WhatsApp. While at it, think about the questions below;

Have you ever been rejected? How did you handle it? What significant thing happened after the rejection? Like how Adele’s heart break led to great music career.

Now think about rejection in the tech world, what do you think happens when a rejection  takes place there?  How do tech giants handle rejections by startups/small tech companies?

Let me bring it home to familiar grounds, how did Facebook (read Mark Zuckberberg) react to SnapChat’s  buy rejection?

Answer: He went and developed the only money making feature, the bread for the developers of Snapchat and added it to Instagram in August 2016, then went ahead in February 2017 and added it to WhatsApp.

Mark seems to be a person who doesn’t take no very way. He will find all ways to throw under the bus when you do and no one will punish him for it. Ohh Evans!  Maybe you should have joined the big Facebook family.

I am not here to throw a pity party for an excellent mind, Evans should/ must raise up, let him re-innovate, find another interesting feature people will love, just as they love stories.

While at that

Kampala Uber Drivers Struck / are striking.

For the last coming to two weeks I have been failing to get a Uber at first request. Its looks the drivers are responding to requests and refusing to pick me because I am not willing to part with more money away from the app estimates or app fare prices.

I have also noticed some other people complaining about the same thing. Among the 5 who respond to your request, only one will allow to pick you and accept the estimated or app fares.

When I asked why, the drivers say they want more money for the trip than what the app is offering. Some have even gone on to ask if  I can allow them to start the trip from wherever they are, while heading to pick them; so that they can make more money on the trip. Others  just refuse when you say no to their request for more money and also refuse to cancel requests, causing clients to incur cancellation fees.

Whatever Uber is doing, they need to clam their drivers the best way possible before they start losing their clients to other operators in the city.
It should be known that this is not the first Uber strike to happen in East Africa, Kenya suffered such strikes before and the company harmonized them. I hope they do the same in Uganda.
While at it, we need Ubers in other districts too.
Not forgetting, how many of you got UberChoma the other week? You see with the drivers on strike, none of them really cared about your Uchomo cravings so I am guessing many of your missed out.

People Are Canceling Their Netflix Accounts Over “Dear White People

Yeah, white people are canceling their Netflix accounts of a coming soon series called Dear White People.

Inverse Culture reported that “The trailer for Netflix’s upcoming series Dear White People struck a chord with white supremacists. Many are canceling their service and using the Twitter hashtag #NoNetflix to publicize it.”

It had to branch off in to Tech somehow, Racism is a disease that is going to kill us all. Just like the two engineers who were shot by a white Kansas man, who was even yelling at them to “Get out of my country.” One engineer was killed the other is recovering.

Disrupt Africa featured an articled by Wim van der Beek, founder and managing partner of Goodwell Investments that keys in on how technology is making wide-sweeping changes across the African continent and creating a new narrative from “Africa Rising” to “African Aspiring.”

Have you updated your Instagram app yet?

The current update allows you to share up to 10 photos and videos in one post, creating an album on a particular topic in pictures.
 
This mean there will no need going through one’s profile looking for images on a particular event or topic.
 
It helps segment and arrange images according to the preference and story.
 
We are not sure about the data consumption but are excited about this.
 
How to do it;
* When uploading to your feed, you’ll see a new icon to select multiple photos and videos.
* Tap and hold to change the order.
* Apply a filter to everything at once or edit one by one.
* In feed, swipe through to see them all.
 
This feature will be rolling out globally over the next few weeks says instagram.

Former tech CEO gets prison in US after self-exile in Africa

Here this was an interesting one to read. A wealthy former CEO who dodged securities fraud charges by spending a decade in Africa with a $50 million nest egg was sentenced Thursday to 30 months in prison by a judge in New York City who blasted him as “foolish” for hatching his scheme and fleeing justice for so long.
