Its your responsibility as a parent to guide your child in the right ways of life not the teacher.

The teacher is there to teach not parent, that is your duty and right as a parent from the time you started talking about bearing children. Stop dumping your responsibilities to people.

It is very common now days for parents to leave their God given responsibility of parenting to strangers who they pay to teach or take care of their children and hope the parenting duty will come in as a bonus .

When I was growing up, I always discussed what I learnt from school with my parents who impacted more knowledge on the topic being discussed.

They made sure that I learnt it concurrently with the life lesson they wanted me know as I grew up.

But now, most children don’t have that, parents are busy drinking, hanging in bars and other entertainment places as maids and teachers impact their children. No wonder children respect the teachers and maids more than their parents.

You really need to spend more time with your children...
You really need to spend more time with your children…

When I was in Tororo last week, I got a chance to talk to a policeman who was protecting the compound where we were having the Sex Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) Alliance celebrations.

This gentleman told me that he had no time talking to his children about sexuality and sexual health because he is not a teacher, he pays the teachers good money to do that for him.

I asked him what he thought parenting was and what it means; “Providing for my children and loving them is parenting” was his answer.

You see most of you think parenting is giving birth to children, provide for their needs and be accountable for them, but forget that it also includes building friendships among and with your children, providing guidance, mentoring and praying for them.

Teaching them the ways of life is your responsibility as is counselling them. Parenting is a parent’s responsibility as teaching is a teacher’s.

Stop mixing roles and overwhelming underpaid teachers with more duties that are meant to be yours.

Solider up and be the best parent and friend your child could ever have.

Be your child’s first best friend.

  1. The trends have changed and so the community. Family nurturing is nolonger observed and technology has spoilt our generation. As much as you my blame the parents, but also the children are to blame. They (children) pay more attention to TV and internet than their parents. The way our parents brought us up is not the way we are doing to our children. We had all the ears in our parents direction because we did not have other things to distruct our attention which is not the case today.
