It is here the mute button on twitter which is going to see many brands loss mileage online. It seem like Twitter is using this mute button to help boost it’s advertising.

So how does this muting button work?

Earlier today a tweep asked the use of the mute button on twitter…

The question very tweep online is asking. The answer is when you mute someone all their tweets and retweets will no longer appear on your timeline from the time you mute them onwards. So if a brand or tweep is muted, your are like dead to that person who has muted you. Only previous tweets and retweets will remain in their feed to preserve history.

The average number of Twitter followers per user is 208, with the majority following more people than who follow them, and given that 24.5% of all Twitter profiles aren’t following anyone at all, that number is actually significantly higher amongst active users. With this no matter the muting you do, there is a chance you will still see some of those tweets from that tweep.

Through replies and mentions from muted tweeps will still appear in your twitter ‘bell’. This is the only thing brands can leverage in regard to influencer outreach.

Or brands can lean on producing popular content that can retweeted by many that even the ones who muted the latter can see the retweets on their timeline. Muting removes anything a muted tweep tweets or re-tweet, but it won’t block tweets including his/her handle if mentioned in another tweep’s tweet.

‘The concerns about muting and Twitter reach, at this stage, are unfounded, as we don’t have any data on what the impacts could be, but I wouldn’t expect the change to significantly reduce reach. It’s a much different scenario to the Facebook News Feed changes, requiring a lot more work on the user end to actively select and restrict specific profiles. And as with all platforms, if you create shareable content, it’s going to reach the widest possible audience, either way.” Andrew Hutchinson is a writer and social media consultant from Melbourne Australia.
