After #UgBlogWeek, (still reading and re-visiting those beautiful blogs) I was asked if Facebook can be used as a blogging platform and if so how can one do it.

notess

This is what I think in regard to that. And these are not comprehensive views that are a must follow, we all blog for different reasons.

So if you are going to start using Facebook as your blog platform, blog meaning; (Picks definition from Google)

blog
bläɡ/
noun: blog; plural noun: blogs
  1. 1.
a regularly updated website or web page, typically one run by an individual or small group, that is written in an informal or conversational style.
verb: blog; 3rd person present: blogs; past tense: blogged; past participle: blogged; gerund or present participle: blogging
  1. 1.
add new material to or regularly update a blog.
“it’s about a week since I last blogged”
    • write about (an event, situation, topic, etc.) in a blog.
“he blogged the Democratic and Republican national conventions as an independent”

You will need to understand and know why you are blogging in the first place. Why do you blog? Why do want to start updating a web page with content about anything?

When you find answers to that, then ask yourself who you want to read these blogs and why? Actually go through all the Ws and H.

Do you have ‘making some money’ as an answer to the Why you want to or Why You blog? If so you need to understand what clients ask of bloggers (ROI – Return On Investment). Most clients will ask you of blog statistics. How many people does it reach, how many read what you write? This is what interests paying clients. They pay for reach because to them you are a ground for some kind of advertising and marketing in your content. (With no desire to go into the details of adverting and marketing) This is how their benefit.

Anyway so how does Facebook work as a blog platform?

Your status update post can be a blog though, there this Notes and it what I am going to focus on. Recently Facebook rolled out an update that turned Notes in to a blogging platform. You can now add a cover photo as a featured image, as well as insert photos with captions. You can also format your text with headers, quotes or bullets.

See image below on where to find the Notes tab on your Facebook profile.

The new update is a well welcomed add on for some like me who had stopped using that tool for that and many other reasons.

Its should be known that this platform on your personal profile offers no statistics (my other reason why I left it), but works on the hope that your friends will see your notes and read them.

This is not authentic and clients don’t trust it. Though if you have a Facebook page you can boost the Notes and see how many people were reached by your post. If you boost, you have entered a different section of Facebook and would have to follow the guidelines that govern that advertising section.

Also as a page, you can do with the Notes post as you do with all the other posts on your page. Share on your personal profile, share in groups, share on friends walls, tag people in your posts. These can also be done on a personal profile.

But still you will not be able to measure!

The idea here is that blogging in most cases is for hits, and if you can’t measure how many people were reached, you are like one talking to oneself.

So choose wisely a platform, that lets others find.

Let me know of your views about this….

  1. Stella Nyanzi’s posts are widely popular on Facebook, but does she use notes? They come as just that, posts. I guess one can decide to intentionally use their wall as their blogging platform and the numbers in that case would be the comments, likes and shares!

    Measuring though!!

    1. Yeah, the big elephant is measuring, how do you convince a client that you will have a certain number of hits?

About Stella, I don’t get her posts in my stream, meaning my friends who might be her friends whose friends, whose friends might be friends with her don’t share them for me to find them; except if I search for her.

Notes is Facebook saying, you blog here but we have already seen people posting posts on their walls what would pass as blogs for Facebook Notes…
Its just a jungle on Facebook, too much going on there, a lot gets lost in there.

  2. Hmmmm. I have always found it hard to use Facebook’s notes function and now that it has instruments to measure ROI, it will be trickier. From what I have seen, people get more mileage when they post on their walls than on Facebook notes. But maybe that might change.
Until they figure out a way to get the notes in front there, these other blogging sites are still way ahead of them.
