Learning is a lifelong process that does not end when an individual graduates from school. As adults, we continue to learn and acquire knowledge, information, and experiences through various means. However, adult learning has its own positives and negatives that can be challenging to navigate. While examining learning and teaching methods to fit my current needs and the students who teach, I found that traditional classroom settings are not the best-preferred learning option for adults.
Adult learners, enjoy the process of learning more than when they are able to examine what is being taught and how it will benefit them in their current situation. I have found myself learning more from materials I self-identify and search for to solve my problems than from materials I got from chalk-to-board classes. Having the ability to choose what best suits my needs is a welcome advantage in adult learning. My needs might be career-based, personal interests, or just pure curiosity, and still, I have never failed to find the necessary information to facilitate my learning.
During my school days, I struggled in class as I asked many questions and conceptualized a lot. Most of what I learned seemed to be irrelevant to where I wanted to land in my career and as a person. Today, I am excited and happy with the way I am learning. I sometimes feel my young self jumping with excitement within me as this is what we desired then.
Finding the right way to learn is better than teaching a child.
The primary benefit of adult learning is the ability to learn at one’s own pace. This is the best for anyone who has other commitments that prevent them from attending traditional classroom settings. When I attended the School of Leadership at Harvest Institute, I found the learning pace and method that I longed for as a kid. It was the perfect setting for discussion, questioning, and experimenting. Everything wasn’t set in stone. As an adult learner who has a clear understanding of what I want to learn, the institution tailored its teaching to meet my specific goals and still does for many other learners.
I am a techie. I like technological advancement and its new developments. So when learning takes advantage of modern technology, like online learning platforms which offer a wealth of information and resources, making it easier than ever before to access educational materials, I am most appreciative. But also believe individuals in remote areas get a chance to learn new things.
Despite the many benefits of adult learning, there are also some drawbacks to consider. One of the primary disadvantages is the lack of face-to-face interaction with instructors and other learners. This can hinder some individuals who thrive in a classroom environment. Additionally, the lack of structure in self-directed learning can be challenging for some individuals who need a more structured approach to education.
In conclusion, I have found that it is important to find the learning style that best suits your needs and goals. Whether it is through traditional classroom settings or modern online learning platforms, the key is to find a method of learning that is both effective and enjoyable.
